With vehicles growing in size, many drivers face a challenge when parking in standard bays. It raises a fair question: are parking spaces too small for modern cars?
UK parking spaces measure 2.4 metres wide by 4.8 metres long. Those dimensions were established decades ago, when cars were generally more compact. Modern cars, though, have grown significantly. The average width of new cars in the UK rose from 177.8 cm in 2021 to 180.3 cm in early 2023, making standard bays an ever-tighter squeeze.1
What happens if your car is too big for the space?
- Overhanging vehicles. Cars that don’t fit entirely within a bay can obstruct adjacent spaces or walkways, creating hazards.
- Increased risk of damage. Tight fits lead to scratches, dents, or worse. The Sunday Times estimates UK drivers paid almost £1.5bn in repair bills in 2024 due to car-park damage.2
- Parking fines. Drivers can be fined if a vehicle extends beyond the marked lines or obstructs other areas.
Will spaces change?
- Redesigning bays. Updating standard bay dimensions would ease many of these issues, and some councils are considering larger sizes to better fit today’s cars.
- Size-based charges. Cities such as Cardiff have proposed higher parking charges for larger vehicles, aiming to manage space more efficiently and encourage smaller cars in congested areas.3
