What is a car's turning circle — and why it matters for parking
When people talk about how “easy to park” a car is, they usually mean two things: how big its footprint is, and how tightly it turns. That second one — the turning circle — is the number most buyers never check, and it’s often the difference between a one-shuffle park and a twelve-point saga.
What the turning circle actually measures
A car’s turning circle is the diameter of the smallest circle it can turn within. It’s usually quoted kerb to kerb (the circle the tyres trace) — occasionally wall to wall, which is a little larger because it includes the bodywork overhang.
The smaller the number, the tighter the car can turn. A tight turning circle means you can:
- Swing into a bay in one movement instead of shuffling back and forth
- Reverse into a tight spot without a three-point turn becoming a five-pointer
- Manage mini-roundabouts, multi-storey ramps and narrow lanes with less drama
What’s a good turning circle?
As a rough guide for everyday cars:
- Under ~10 m — genuinely tight and city-friendly
- ~10–11.5 m — typical for most family cars
- Over ~12 m — you’ll notice you need more room to swing around
The extremes make the point. The tiny Smart ForTwo turns within about 6.95 m — it can practically spin on the spot. At the other end, the original Hummer H1 needs a colossal 15.24 m, which is a big part of why it’s a nightmare in town regardless of parking-bay maths.
Why two similar cars can turn so differently
Turning circle isn’t just about size. It’s driven by:
- Wheelbase — the distance between the front and rear axles. A longer wheelbase generally widens the turning circle, which is why long-wheelbase and seven-seat versions of a car turn more lazily than the standard model.
- Steering lock — how far the front wheels can physically turn.
- Drivetrain and tyre width — wide tyres and driven front wheels can limit steering lock.
It’s also why an electric car can surprise you either way: EVs sometimes have more steering lock (no bulky engine in the way), but their extra weight and wide tyres can pull the other direction.
The catch: manufacturers don’t always publish it
Width and length are easy to find. Turning circles aren’t — plenty of manufacturers simply don’t quote them. Where a figure isn’t available, Parkadoo still shows the car, but uses a cautious estimated value for the parking animation, marked with an asterisk (*). It’s indicative only.
